Panama to Host Latin America’s Top Public-Private Partnerships Forum, PPP Americas
The president of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) announced that Panama City will host the 11th regional forum in 2023.
The announcement followed a bilateral meeting between the president of the IDB, Mauricio Claver-Carone, and the president of Panama, Laurentino Cortizo, to discuss joint efforts to accelerate Panama's development and explore opportunities to enhance Panama's leadership in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The event will bring together top professionals and public and private-sector representatives from Latin America and the Caribbean to discuss groundbreaking topics and exchange ideas on planning, structuring, and managing public-private partnerships.
“Sustainable recovery should be led by the private sector. Given Panama’s recent strides on public-private partnerships and the major opportunities in the country, I can think of no better place to hold this forum,” said Claver-Carone. “PPP Americas is a unique opportunity to discuss and find ways for private partnerships to boost economic recovery in the region and identify how private investment can amplify the development of efficient, sustainable, and innovative services and infrastructure.”
As part of its roadmap to regional economic revival described in the Vision 2025 – Reinvest in the Americas, the IDB fosters synergies between the public and private sectors to position the private sector as a driver of change and partner in implementing development agendas.
The IDB helps the public sector strengthen regional regulatory frameworks for public-private partnerships; prepare and structure viable, efficient, sustainable, fiscally attainable, and fundable projects; and reduce risk in the business environment. Meanwhile, the bank’s interface with the private sector, IDB Invest, and innovation lab, IDB Lab, work with the private sector to mobilize capital and knowledge on a large scale, managing the impact of these efforts on fiscal accounts while bolstering the drivers of recovery.
PPP Americas has been held in Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Chile, Uruguay, Colombia, Mexico, Spain and the United States. The most recent forum, hosted by São Paulo (Brazil), was the first offered in hybrid format. The event was streamed live to more than 1,500 people from every country in the region and to investors and stakeholders around the globe. The 2023 event will also be hybrid, with live transmission from Panama and free online participation through the event’s exclusive platform.
